Phlox divaricata L. is a shade-loving perennial known for its fragrant, lavender to pink to violet blooms. Commonly called Wild Blue Phlox or Wild Sweet William, this delicate woodland species grows 8-20 inches tall, with loose, flat clusters of notched-petal flowers atop its erect stems. Thriving in moist, rich deciduous woods and bluffs, it prefers part shade to full shade and well-drained, loamy soils. A valuable nectar source, its flowers attract butterflies such as swallowtails, gray hairstreaks, and western pygmy blues. While ornamental in woodland gardens, its roots may be browsed by rabbits and voles. With its soft, spreading habit, Wild Blue Phlox adds a graceful touch to shaded landscapes.
