Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a native Texas prairie grass known for its striking height often reaching 6 to 8 feet when in bloom. Its three pronged seed heads resemble a turkey's foot, giving the plant its nickname. It's deep root system can extend up to 10 feet tall, allowing it to survive droughts, making it essential in prairie restoration and erosion control. In the summer, its foliage  appears blue-green, turning shades of copper and burgundy in fall. Big bluestem provides nesting cover and food for wildlife, including grassland birds and pollinators.
