Retama, Parkinsonia aculeata, also known as Paloverde, is a small, spiny tree from the pea family. This tree blooms prolifically through the warm months, especially after rain, with yellow flowers and seed pods. This fast-growing tree is native to Texas and is drought-tolerant and heat-tolerant making it perfect for a low maintenance native garden! Paloverde likes soils that are not too dry and not too moist. During droughts, the tree can lose it's leaves but chlorophyll production will shift to the trunk making it a brighter green.
