Mexican Hat (Ratibida columnifera), also known as Red-spike Mexican Hat, Upright Prairie Coneflower, and Thimbleflower, is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial wildflower native to North American prairies and grasslands. It thrives in a variety of well-drained soils, including sand, loam, clay, and caliche. This adaptable plant features slender, unbranched stems with deeply lobed, feathery leaves concentrated at the base. Its unique sombrero-shaped flowers bloom from May to October, with drooping yellow and red-brown petals surrounding a tall, dark brown central cone. Mexican Hat is highly beneficial for wildlife, attracting bees, butterflies, and birds while its strong-scented foliage helps repel deer. Due to its fast growth and prolific seed production, it is ideal for wildflower meadows, prairie restorations, and pollinator gardens but may outcompete weaker species.
