Prunus salicina ‘Methley’ is a fast-growing, deciduous fruit tree known for its sweet, juicy plums and early-season harvest. A cultivar of Japanese plum, Methley produces medium to large, round to conical clingstone fruit with purple-red skin and red flesh, ripening from late May to early July, depending on location. The fruit is mildly sweet, making it excellent for fresh eating and jelly.
This self-fertile variety does not require a pollinator but benefits from multiple trees for a larger crop. It also serves as a good pollinator for other early-bearing Japanese plums. Blooming in early spring, it is covered in clusters of fragrant white flowers and features bright green, ovate leaves with finely toothed margins. Methley is heat-tolerant but susceptible to late spring frosts, and fruit thinning is recommended for optimal development. With a chill requirement of 150–250 hours, it thrives in USDA zones 5-9 and prefers full sun and well-drained soil.
