Mexican Bird of Paradise (Erythrostemon mexicanus), also known as Yellow Bird of Paradise or Mexican Poinciana, is a versatile shrub native to northeastern Mexico, and potentially to the southern tip of Texas. While some experts debate its native range, it has become a popular ornamental plant throughout Texas. Growing to about 6-8 feet in colder areas like Tucson, it can reach up to 15 feet in warmer climates. This drought-tolerant plant showcases vibrant yellow flowers with hints of red on the upper petals, blooming from March through summer.

Mexican Bird of Paradise thrives in full sun and benefits from summer irrigation for more reliable flowering. While it has an open, airy form, pruning and fertilizing can increase its fullness. It's best to remove spent flower stalks to encourage new blooms, and seed pods if they become too heavy.

Note: The seeds and pods are poisonous, and the plant may reseed in irrigated landscapes.
