Mahonia trifoliolata (Moric. Fedde) is a resilient evergreen shrub that thrives in rocky, limestone-based soils and adapts well to dry or moist conditions. Preferring low water use, it flourishes in full sun to part shade. Agarita features gray-green to blue-gray, holly-like leaves with spiny edges, and it produces clusters of fragrant yellow flowers in early spring. The edible red berries are a favorite of songbirds and are often used in jelly or wine. This shrub also provides excellent cover for wildlife and is a good honey source.
