Prairie Ironweed (Vernonia fasciculata), also known as Common Ironweed or Smooth Ironweed, is a tall, hardy perennial native to moist prairies, wetlands, and river bottoms. It produces upright stems topped with dense, flat clusters of vivid purple flowers from mid-summer into early fall. Thriving in full sun and moist to wet soils, it can tolerate occasional flooding and is an excellent choice for rain gardens, native plant gardens, and the back of borders. Its late-season blooms provide valuable nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its seeds provide food for birds.
