In addition, they are drought tolerant and deer resistant. While they spread aggressively by self-seeding and tuberous rootstocks, controlling their spread is simple: just deadhead the flowers before seed set. We also recommend planting in a pot! All parts of the garlic chives plant emit an oniony smell when cut or crushed, though the flowers have a scent much like violets. Due to their extensive use in Chinese cuisine, they are also known as Chinese chives.
